The Uncertain Nature of Change

A significant part of change is the uncertainty we experience. There is a transitional period where we can no longer remain where we are, yet where we are heading isn't clear. This space of nothingness can have emotional effects. Our natural disposition can be to seek control over the unknown. This journey of wanting control, to protect ourselves from what may happen - can stir up emotions that can last for a short time or remain with us for a longer term.

One such emotion is anxiousness. Anxiousness is described as 'feeling or showing worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome'. Such an emotion is a part of our natural fight or flight response to perceived danger, it can become challenging though, when it sets up camp within in us. We can become stuck in an emotional loop that is unhealthy for us.

It is important to mention that while you may experience anxiousness, it does not mean you are your anxiousness. This is an important step in shifting your current experience. To accept that I am experiencing anxiousness is different to accepting that I am inherently an anxious person. Emotions and moods can be with us for a long time and we can begin to think that there is something wrong with us, that we are somehow broken and need fixing. To shift our mood, it can be beneficial to see these experiences as opportunities to learn about ourselves.

If we are experiencing anxiousness due to constant change, then asking what is causing this for us, can be a powerful question to reveal an invisible driver. If that driver is the fear that we cannot see or cope with the uncertain outcome of change, then it is natural that we will experience a degree of anxiousness. To shift this experience with anxiousness, it requires us to accept that the outcome of change is uncertain. This does not mean we accept some of negative realities we may have dreamed up if we do. Rather it means we transition towards what our future could be. It allows the possibility of different realities, for creativity to spring forth, to learn from the experience. If we can accept the uncertainty of life, then creativity and possibility become available to us. We can begin to see our ability to cope with change and realise the potential that lies within us.
